Canvas is a cloud-based software service and mobile app platform that enables businesses to replace paper forms and manual processes with customizable apps for mobile and tablets, with no programming or IT needed. In the Canvas 'application store,' businesses can access pre-built, customizable apps for mobile devices.  They can then share forms and the captured data of back office systems with a community of users. Individuals can customize existing apps or create their own. [1] Users can customize the apps to include GPS, image capture, dispatch, barcode scanning, electronic signatures, push notifications and access business data such as parts catalogs, price lists and patient records.

Canvas was founded in 2008, and headquartered in Reston, Virginia. Canvas is a response to the growing need of businesses to reduce paperwork: the average office worker goes through 10,000 sheets of paper each year, costing an estimated $40 per case of paper, meaning that businesses spend $80 annually on paper per worker. [8]  Since its founding, the company has encouraged employees to choose a non-profit and covers their travel expenses to implement Canvas products for free at that organization.  The idea is that employees will return with a better understanding of customer pain points and more effective ways to implement Canvas solutions. [4]  In 2014 Canvas announced integration of its services with Dropbox, Box, Evernote, and Google Drive, enabling businesses to send and store collected from their Canvas mobile apps to their cloud-storage service. [6] In addition to the new services, James Quigley announced a new separate entity called Refraction, a coworking space aimed towards tech startups, nonprofits, and artisits within the Reston area.
